This is the problem. There is a huge difference between education and purposely trying to make people afraid. This could have been a straight forward infographic giving simple facts about shark attacks. Yes, they do happen. Yes, a shark investigates by biting. Sometimes what they bite happens to be a human. As you can see in the infographic the “taking a bite out of them” is bolded for dramatic effect. Just as the “sharp, serrated teeth arranged in rows” is. Both of those are bolded to strike fear in a person.

This is not how you educate the public. This is what makes people feel that the horrible things done to sharks aren’t a big deal. Because if we demonize an animal people will want them gone. It doesn’t matter to them that ecosystems will be ruined because of it.

The number of humans killed isn’t even remotely close to the number of sharks killed each year. These are hundreds verses millions.

The ending of this infographic claims that the most dangerous shark is the one swimming right towards you, but the really most dangerous things are the ones creating things like this just to spread fear.

[please do not remove the caption because it defeats the whole purpose of this post and will only further promote a negative image for sharks]

Oarfish Video!!! First recorded footage of an Oarfish EVER. Oarfish live approximately 0.6-1.5 miles down in the ocean and are likely completely blind. They wash up on the shores worldwide periodically, places ranging from California to Scotland. They can grow up to 30 ft, possibly even larger, and look amazing. Video starts at 3:40 because that’s where you can see the oarfish.

More information about the elusive Oarfish! One found off the coast of California this week!!!
